What is intrinsic safety?

Explosion protection is subject to principles that establish different levels of safety corresponding to three measures that must be applied in the following order:

  • Eliminate explosive atmospheres if possible
  • Eliminate any source of ignition from an explosive atmosphere.
  • Minimize the consequences of an explosion in case it occurs.

How to define intrinsic safety?

Intrinsically safe equipment emits such low electrical or thermal energy that it can in no way cause a flammable or combustible gas mixture to ignite under the test conditions.

Who checks intrinsically safe?

The equipment is tested and certified inherently safe by independent third-party organizations, such as Bureau Veritas, DNV, INERIS (ATEX and IECEX), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Factory Mutual Research Corporation (FM) or the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

Independent testing established that your fire or gas detection system is designed, not only to be inherently safe, but it meets all required intrinsic safety standards.
